Gyokuro (玉露, meaning "jade dew") is a premium Japanese green tea celebrated for its rich umami flavor, delicate sweetness, and smooth, oceanic aroma. 

Due to the level of care and attention needed to produce Gyokuro it is a rather rare tea – less than 1 percent of all tea made in Japan is Gyokuro.

In contrast to making shaded Sencha, where the covers for blocking direct sunshine are spread directly on the plant, Gyokuro is grown under a special construction that allows more space for the tea leaves to steep out. Gyokuro is shade-grown for about 20–30 days before harvest. This shading process boosts the levels of theanine and chlorophyll, resulting in its signature deep green leaves and mellow, savory taste.

Gyokuro is traditionally served in little cups or prestigious ceremonies which makes enjoying Gyokuro even more special.

Brewing Recommendations

  • Water temperature: 50–60°C 
  • Leaf-to-water ratio: 1 tsp per 30 ml 
  • Steep time: 1.5 to 2 minutes (first infusion)
