Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Matcha

Matcha is a type of powdered green tea that's known for its vibrant green colour and distinctive flavour. It originates from Japan and is made from high-quality tea leaves that are grown in the shade to increase their chlorophyll content. The leaves are then steamed, dried, and finely ground into a powder.

When you drink matcha, you're consuming the entire tea leaf, which means you get a more concentrated dose of nutrients and antioxidants compared to steeped green tea. It's often used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, but it has also gained popularity as an ingredient in various recipes, including lattes, smoothies, and baked goods. The flavor can be described as earthy, slightly bitter, and vegetal, and it provides a gentle, sustained energy boost due to its caffeine content.

2. What do I need to make Matcha

To prepare matcha, you'll need a few essential tools and ingredients. Here’s a basic guide to what you need and how to use them:

  1. Matcha Powder: High-quality matcha powder is crucial for the best flavour and texture. Look for ceremonial-grade matcha for drinking and culinary-grade matcha for cooking and baking. Our matcha is the highest quality of premium ceremonial grade, shipped and made to order directly from Japan

  2. Chawan (Matcha Bowl): A wide, shallow bowl (usually ceramic) that allows for whisking the matcha effectively while keeping it at the ideal temperature for the best flavour and texture profile.

  3. Chasen (Bamboo Whisk): A bamboo whisk specifically designed to mix matcha and water, creating a smooth and frothy texture.

  4. Chashaku (Bamboo Scoop): A bamboo scoop used to measure the right amount of matcha powder required without the need for a measuring scale.

  5. Sifter: A small sifter or fine mesh strainer to remove clumps from the matcha powder.

3. How do I store my matcha

Ideally matcha is kept refrigerated for freshness, used within 4-6 weeks from date of opening. Matcha should be kept airtight, away from light and moisture to preserve its taste.

4. How do I stop my matcha from clumping? Help!

It is extremely normal for matcha to clump overtime from storage due to friction build uip. Sifting your matcha will help break up the clumps and allow for a smoother drinking experience!

Did you know? Our matcha powder is of extremely high quality that we rarely need to sift them due to its fine texture!

5. What is the difference between our Yabukita and organic matcha powder?

They are both of premium ceremonial grade, harvested and grown to the highest standard, however due to the slight difference in materials used to grow the powder, the Yabukita matcha powder has a slightly stronger and richer taste compared to the organic matcha powder, which has a more mellow taste. Both are of Yabukita cultivars.

Feel free to try both to taste the difference!
